It's fall, so what? Thanksgiving and Christmas are just around the corner(Ugh), whatever. Doesn't mean we can't wish this "Sno-Fi" would just go away and stay away. Need some tropical vibes asap? Look no further, 'De Rol Le'' has got you covered. On some aspects you could say 'De' is yet another great chill-wave act but you would be oh so wrong. This guy is the best of the best. He doesn't just make amazing islands jams, he's got some incredible ambient tracks as well. "Beach Cassette Jam," my favorite song, is a perfect example of 'De's' talents. Hey guyz, I just want to start by saying sorry. I'm really bad at this updating thing. Just in case you haven't been following us on twitter, my explanation for the lack of posts these past weeks is as follows. On OCT 22nd I was hit with some very bad news. My brother had fallen very ill with what seemed to be swine flu, so I decided to take him into the hospital. After waiting six hours in the emergency room we found out that he did indeed have H1N1. They gave him a shot of something and within the hour he was feeling a little better. Later I took him home and he immediately fell asleep. After calling my family I also fell asleep. The next morning I woke up with a knock on my door. I asked "WHAT!?" and received no answer, wanting to know who woke me up, I slammed open the door. It was my brother, well sort of. He was now half human, half bear. He groaned a awful growl and threw my across my room. Luckily, I was smoking salmon from a day or two before hand and began pelting him with the remainder of what I had not eaten. I smashed my bedroom window and jumped out. I landed on the grass below with my bear brother following in pursuit. As I hopped over the fence, I saw my neighbor waving me inside. So, instinctively I ran to the door. Only to find that she was also a "bearman." She swiped at me and took my arm clean off. After falling on the ground, in shock, because I just had my arm torn off, I decided to run for the hills, while both my brother and neighbor were fighting over my freshly severed arm. I ran for what seemed like 3 nights and came to a old abandoned mansion. The door creaked as I opened it to see if it was safe. A bag was suddenly thrown over my head and I was taken to a holding cell. After hours in the cell I was escorted into a room to meet a women named Sheila. Sheila was a homely women with bags under her eyes and a face only a mother could love. After a few whispers to her compatriots they knelt me in front of her. She then exclaimed "Have you come in contact with them?" Not knowing what was going on, I said the first thing that popped into my head, "Who the hell are you." She began to tell me a story, it seemed that I had been sleeping for a week due to the exhaustion of waiting six hours in the emergency room and that mankind as we know it had been turned into half man, half bear beasts. She said it was all caused by the swine flu vaccine. Apparently it had been replaced with a highly unstable neuro-toxin that led to humans turning into bears. She said "We are whats left. We are the resistance." I have now spent a couple days with the resistance and this all seems routine to me. We fight, some of us die, and some of us don't. It's all some kind of hellish nightmare, whats left of human kind has either been eaten by bears or is fighting in the resistance. I don't know were to go from here. I guess I'll just have to keep blogging about great music, in hopes of taking away some of the pain that fills all of our hearts. Our days are numbered my friends but more great music is on the way. Hey guyz, we back! Midterms were rough but we got through em' aight. Anyway I've got some great stuff for y'all today. 'Chrome Wings' is an amazing ambient pop outfit from Portland, Oregon. Other than putting out some great jams, these guys are the nicest of people. The process of getting the mp3's to our ears was annoying, to say the least. After about six or seven failed Sendspace attempts and one failed Mediafire account, I finally got the songs. Through the whole agonizing process, Jon (1/2 of 'CW') couldn't have been nicer or tried harder to send me the jams, because he's the best. So, much love and all that. Anyway back to the music. "New Legs," a what seems to be a tribute to old Gameboy sound effects is just incredible. Subtle tones and a hint of melody trickle through the song and create something both beautiful and haunting, picture a Double Dragons cut but remixed into something ten times better. 'Byrds Of Paradise' was first introduced to us by the coolest of dudes, over at ye ol' Friendship Bracelet. 'Byrds' has been blowing up all over our buddy's sites, and rightfully so, these guy's put out the jams. Brilliant guitar work and gleaming vocals are 'Byrds' main attributes. "Paradise DC," lo-fi pop wise, is one of the best pop anthems, I've heard all year. The guitar part in this song is so amazing. I find that music becomes increasingly genuine the simpler it gets, you honestly don't need much to create great tunes. This group exemplifies originality, what this outfit can do with a couple guitars, a bass, and some drums, is in a word, exceptional. If you're in Seattle right now you know that it's pouring, luckily I've got the perfect cure for the rainy day blues. 'Air Waves' were kind enough to hook it up with a couple new tracks. 'Air Waves' has been on our radar for a while now, with songs like "Shine On" and "Knockout" blowing up on the headquarters of our blogging buddy's, it's been hard to avoid the amazing surf folk. With the low amount of vitamin d around here during the winter, it's nice to have a band that can cheer you up, once and a while. "Lightning," a gorgeous love song that rivals any 'Magnetic Fields' jam, echos with a gauzy acoustic strum and a lush electric pick. 'Beirut,' you can't really get any better than that sweet Balkan chill. That is until you get someone like 'Tom Croose' to remix it. 'Tom Croose,' is a chill-wave artist from, where else but Brooklyn. This guy prduces some amazing remixes. Take 'Beirut's,' "Venice," for instance, originally this song was great but 'Croose' takes it over the edge. Tropical drums and the keyboards are shuffled to create easily my favorite 'Beirut" remix. Haunted Houses

Will lo-fi ever get old? Probably not as long as we have bands like 'Haunted Houses' around to keep us goons in line. Dude makes the jams. If I could soundtrack my life, I'd probably ask 'HH' to do it. Although the project is pretty bedroom rock, it's not the ears-bleed-core stuff we're used to hearing these days. It's far more delicate, extremely well put together dreamy jams. The song crafting is some of the best I've heard in a long time. While some of the songs are instrumentals, the vocals are simply put, prodigious. "Day After Hospital Part III" showcases these two attributes the best. Rainy guitar and heartsick vocals, make the song almost a perfect soundtrack to life's low points. Snag "Day After Hospital Part III" and four bonus Mp3's, after the jump.

Tropical repetition has become sort of a standby for people these days. From 'Dog Bite' to 'Panda Bear' the "blogosphere(sorry)" seems to just eat this stuff up. Which makes it all the more difficult to find something fresh in the genre. With that being said, 'Obsidian Pond,' a glo-fi outfit out of the UK, creates some mad temperate melody's. Luckily I was able to get my hands on three outstanding tracks, the first being "Sundog Sinners." Let me just start by saying this is the jam, sunny guitar strums, and Spanish percussion course throughout the song making it a candidate for our year end lists. I can not stop listening to this new jam I just got from 'The Choir Quit,' it is honestly the perfect soundtrack for the weekend. 'The Choir Quit,' is a new lo-fi band from South Carolina. The tunes are mostly guitar based anthems with hints of summer. Sunny vocals and fuzzy instrumentals make 'TCQ' a great addition to this years rising trend, of lo-fi acts. 'Meth Dad' isn't your usual run of the mill freak folk no this is something different, something much more ethereal. I'm not sure this can even be put in the genre. 'MD' is a Tennessee outfit based more in freak than folk, that utilizes odd and alluring sounds to create some pretty chill jams. "Tars," my personal favorite song on the awesome "All Beached Out EP," is just straight incredible. It starts out as any other lo-fi song would but takes a turn for the awesome, around twenty two seconds or so. Ambient music has become a recent staple for me these days, between 'Pink Priest' and 'Cough Cool' I've been pretty satisfied. That is until I heard 'Ocean Bump!' This project is on the same level as the aforementioned 'PP/CC,' sunny, balmy, just a all around great listen. Take "Weathered Film" for instance, every time I play this song I feel like I could break it, the melody's are so delicate that the smallest noise could ruin the whole jam for you. 'Technoir MA,' a Massachusetts based outfit produces some of the most epic guitar pop that I've heard since 'Pains.' Seriously, how these guys haven't just blown up is a complete mystery. The vocals sound like Jan Scott Wilkinson and Bernard Sumner had a love child. "Roundabout," the bands first song off their amazing three jam EP, is a straight up revival of Joy Division, New Order era pop punk. The guitar parts are indescribable. A while back I took a trip to Mexico and the whole time I was there I was wishing I could have some good tropical music to go along with it. Luckily I snagged some 'El Guincho' and 'Coconot'. But still there needed to be more, I could only listen to "Alegranza" so many times. If only I had discovered "Ghost Wave" before hand. This is the pinnacle of the tropical, lo-fi movement. Yes, sipping cerveza and listening to 'GW,' by the bright, blue pacific would have been ideal. Who am I to complain though, It was Mexico. "One By One," my personal favorite song off of 'GW's' three song sampler, is a gorgeous, well put together piece. Damp vocals, Latin inspired guitar, and a simple snare are crafted into one of this years best tropical jams. Snag a copy of both "One By One" and "Sooli," after the jump.

Feature: Run From Fall Mix Tape

There comes a time in every music lovers life when creating a mix tape seems more of an necessity, other than something to do over a long weekend. Growing up in suburbia, making mix tapes to fight off boredom, those were the days.

Before I started this blog I used to make weekly mixes for my buddy's, who are mostly all away from home now, because of school. It was a way to keep in touch and stay connected through music, it was nice, just kind of sharing stuff between one another. Then it was time to share some of that music with the rest of the world, so Ty and I decided to take hold of some real estate on the blog market. Creating what you now see in front of you "Small Estuaries."

So far it's been great, mostly all positive comments and we've made some of the coolest new friends FB, WTD, GOTC, CB, FD, Bn'B, and Bathetic, just to name a few. Yep, life isn't to bad. I relate listening to this next outfit with drinking a good cup of coffee in the morning. It wakes you up and makes you realize how great life actually is. Simply put, it's refreshing. "813 Food," the amazing new single by South Carolina's 'Kid Trails', is by far one of the most creative lo-fi songs of this year. Using what sounds like sticks and a bench for percussion 'KT' produces a pretty heartbreaking jam. Check out "813 Food" and (the recorded earlier today) "All Yr Throat," after the jump.

At the risk of getting in trouble, I'm going to say, there are only about twenty projects in the world that can use samplers properly. Nevada's, 'Boneless' are in the top five. Thanks to our buddy's over at Get Off The Coast, 'Boneless' was brought to our attention earlier this week. For the past few days, I have been going to school, casually listening to the three tracks that were posted on GOTC, trying to think of the words to describe this outfit. It's best described as some of the best use of sampling I've heard all year. Take for instance "Breathless," this track is incredible, it's hard to imagine that ohhs and ahhs, with a couple of guitar chords could ever come close to sounding this good. Oh teenage angst, is there anything quite like it, no I think not. Yes, high schools forever, your parents don't "get" you, these are the best times of your life, etc. Let's face it, even John Hughes would be envious of your high school career. OK, maybe not, but this next outfit is the perfect soundtrack to remind you of the best or in some cases worst, times of your life. 'Summer Blondes,' produce some the best somber lo-fi that we've heard in a while. Somehow they've successfully woven surf rock with good old fashion blues. "Trash'n USA" is the perfect example of this bands talents. The vocals though woeful, properly accompany the instrumentals, with just the right amount of howling. It brings you back to a time where pep rally's and football games were your only plans for a frigid Friday night. Listing to 'Matthewdavid' is like looking at a Matthew Furie illustration. You get the basic idea but there's so much more beneath the surface. 'MD' is an excellent lo-fi, geek hop act from LA. Unlike many of 'MD's' peers, he manages to incorporate soothing mixes of ho's and hum's to make some of the most blissed out songs to date. "First_Day_Rmxd," originally a Dntel track, is a mash of all things that make 'MD' great. Booms, clicks, whistles all culminate to create one exquisite piece of work. What can I say about Kentucky's, 'Babes,' other than this project, is lo-fi perfection. Nothing is overdone, it has just the right amount of everything. Honest vocals, flawless guitar hooks, simple yet progressive drum parts all make this project a favorite of SE. So many bands are trying to hop onto the bandwagon of this lo-fi boom but 'Babes,' makes it feel, oh so right, by simplifying instead of complicating. Take for instance, "Why Do You Make Me Move," one guitar, one drum kit, two dudes, it's fresh, that's the best way to describe it. You can't get anymore rock and roll than that. So, lo-fi is blowing up right now, whats the appeal of it though? For me, I think it's how endearing bedroom pop/rock is. I mean it's just a couple of guys/ladies jamming out in their garage, bedroom, or basement. That's what it's all about, doing it for the love of the game, I mean music, yeah music. Anyway this next band cranks out some pretty amazing stuff. "Dizzy Jaguars" is a unbelievable lo-fi duo from San Diego. Lovable lyrics and smooth pop riffs make this band a massive stand out in the dizzying mess of lo-fi acts these days. Dudes, tear it down. "You Always Break My Heart," is a outstanding production that harness's the bands main attributes, whimpering guitar and smokey vocals. Let me just start by saying this is honestly one of the best Lo-Fi acts I have ever heard. It is a honor to live in the same state as this guy. I was lucky enough to get a promo for 'Naomi Punk's' self titled debut. Words really cannot express how I feel about this project. It can only be described as jangly, lo-fi, pop, bliss. "N/A," or the song better known as "the one with the little Rwandan kids on it," is a complete joy to listen to, I don't think I've ever really listened to a two minute song over ten times but I can not stop viben to this. "The Sun," one of my favorite songs of 2009 (And will be on my year end list!), is an incredibly well crafted song that uses just the right amount of instrumentals and contains pitch perfect vocals. I've got some more noise-ish, lo-fi for you guys today. It's from the amazing Aussie duo 'Assassins 88.' I just found out about these guys from a buddy the other day and managed to get my hands on their first release, "Go Go Second Chance Virgin." The whole album is great but there is one song that was just amazing. The song is called "Age of Consent," Listen I don't know what these guys used to record this but it's bloody terrific. Screaming guitar and a massive drum part set up the song, which is shortly followed by crazy distorted vocals. Is it possible to be too cool? A question that has riddled my mind for the past few days, because lo-fi outfit 'Family Portrait' just might be. Let's check out the facts, Stellar vocals, amazing bass lines, solid percussion, and amazing guitar parts. The hooks that these guys produce are hands down some of the best, put on vinyl, period. Take "On The Floor," one of my favorite songs of this year, for example. It starts with some watered down vocals and is mixed with a blissed out guitar strum to culminate into one of the best tunes of this year. So is it possible to be to cool? Usually I like to listen to music solely on what season it correlates with, it just seems easier to relate to it in that way. That's all different with this next project. I don't think a season exists that this music could pair with. "Alphabets" is one of a few bands that I've encountered in which I am rendered speechless. Trying to put down what this sounds like in words, is like trying to punch Steven Seagal in the face, it's impossible. All I can really say as that it's bloody incredible. Ah, the beach, how we do love it. The sun, the sand, the waves, etc, etc. Living on the west coast does have it's benefits, something that 'The Light Rays' seem to have captured in their music. Radiant guitar hooks, airy drum parts, catchy baselines, and even some chill organ stuff, all contribute to this bands off-the-wall uniqueness. What happens when you mix the sad sound of late seventies era punk, with this years lo-fi movement? It's really not that hard to imagine, 'White Crimes' achieves this and make it look way too easy. 'White Crimes' is a ghostly lo-fi project from Oklahoma. A distorted guitar and mild but exceptional drumming, create some of the most hauntingly original music that has been produced to date. "Forgive The Arrows," my favorite song off the bands killer, "Ruining America EP," is a culmination of the bands talents. What makes a good ambient song? That question has been in the back of my mind all summer. With awesome bands like Wild Safari, Cough Cool, and Pink Priest generating a lot of buzz, ambient music seems to be a fairly applicable thing to talk about. I know some people say, "Oh man, ambient music is something that you should be able to fall asleep to (ugh)." I beg to differ, personally I believe that ambient genre should be savored, it's not something you fall asleep to, it's something you contemplate. Take for example "Jen Paul / No Lakes," a ambient, shoegazey, solo project from Jersey. 'No Lakes' is a outfit that definitely should be admired. Oozing with teen angst, 'No lakes' is ambiance personified, or to put it shortly, girl can jam. Whining, ethereal, guitar parts are pieced together to create an atmospheric and almost airy vibe. 'Big Troubles' is another catchy lo-fi project based out of New Jersey. Samuel from 'Fluffy Lumbers' actually suggested them and we're glad he did. Their incredible single "Freudian Slips," contains some of this years catchiest guitar work. Pounding percussion and water drenched vocals also add to 'Big Troubles' wonderful charm. 'Yarn Owl' produces some legitimate garage pop tunes and are signed to the SE favorite Leftist Nautical Antiques. "Yarn Blues" is basically what indie pop should sound like, its got all the basics, sunny lyrics, jangly guitar riffs and shimmering percussion. Autumn is just around the corner that means that the seasonal summer music will have to go away for yet another year. With that being said, 'Pink Priest' has produced some pretty impressive minimalist tunes for the chill of October and November. Tones and drones are 'Pink Priest's' forte, the fact that Watson can turn a slow hum into something so hauntingly beautiful, makes him a forced to be reckoned with in the world of ambient music. "She Was Dressed As A White Witch" my favorite of 'Priest's,' begins with a epic buzz that rings in your eardrums, until the faint sound of watery keyboard work is subtly placed throughout it. It's a great song for a foggy Autumn morning or a icy, crisp, Fall night. Also check out Watsons other project the breathtakingly sweet 'Wild Safari'. 'Weed Diamond' not to be confused with "Weed Demon," is a outstanding lo-fi solo project out of Denver, Colorado. Although this is a lo-fi outfit the sound doesn't come on as strong as other genre members. Which isn't necessarily a bad thing, Perry's soft vocals are a nice change from the shrill of other acts. "All Of Denver Is Wasted" is 'Diamond's' stand out single. Coastal guitar strums and a heavy percussion create a reasonably epic track. 'Wild Safari's' elegance is only outclassed by their attention to every detail. All I can say is that this is one of the most beautiful projects I have ever had the privileged of listening to. When talking about post-rock many bands come to mind EITS, GYBE, DMST, but none really compare to 'Wild Safari's' superior warm, ambient feel. "Second Base," can be compared to the feeling of warm clothes or a foggy mountain drive. Guitars whimper and synth drones delicately in the background of this, 6 minute too short, track. When you can listen to something all day and never get tired of it you know that, this is the pinnacle of ambient music. Grab "Second Base" and a bonus Mp3, after the jump.

This local band is one of my favorite lo-fi acts to date. 'Buffalo Thunder' really is something special, lyrically endearing, instrumentally equally as lovable. "Summer Crush" a beam of light admix the variable shit storm of up and coming lo-fi tracks, it is both stubborn and playful at the same time. Guy has a summer crush, he writes about it, hum's a little and all is right with the world. The track opens with some vibrant guitar work and is followed by ho's, hum's and aggressive percussion. This band has been on our radar for some time now. They've been all over the Seattle scene via the Vera and other low key venues. So much so that the band has formed a home town following that covers their songs from time to time. 'Herr Jazz's' sound is best described as lo-fi, tropical, punk. The difference between these guys and all the other bands popping up all over the place is they were lo-fi/tropical before it was hip and trendy. "Olympia" is without a doubt one of the best 'Jazz's' best songs. The guitar screams with 'Abe Vigoda'-esque reverb spilling over onto leaping progressive percussion. 'Cough Cool' is a breezy, ethereal, lo-fi project out of Pennsylvania. The sounds that this guy produces are unbelievable, every song that I've heard sounds so gentle and well thought out. From the ambient bass hooks to the intoxicating guitar parts, 'Cough Cool' is what so many lo-fi bands strive to be but sadly don't make the cut. "Flower Reading" is a hazy, reverb drenched track that serves as the soundtrack to either late night star gazing or a sunny Sunday afternoon. No matter which way this song is enjoyed, nothing takes away from it's subtle beauty. Pick up the Mp3 after the jump.

Everyone knows 'Washed Out,' right? Yeah, you all know 'Washed Out'. Well the master of "glo-fi" has created an amazing remix of 'Small Black's,' "Despicable Dogs." Other than remixing what is arguably this summers best song young Ernest Greene has been blowing up all over the "blogosphere" (Ugh, I just got mad douchechills). With tracks like "Belong" and "Hold Out," Greene has risen to Summer indie-rock stardom. This next band is from Germany, that's right Sachsen, Germany. I know, I know, your first reaction is probably double ugh but the 'Hanoi Janes' are really something special. Don't worry their more Beach Boys than Bach. Somehow this band has successfully broken through obscurity and signed with the amazing Captured Tracks. "Across The Sea" is 'Hanoi's' first proper single and is one of the better songs I've heard this Summer. Sample music maybe over blogged these days but the truth is there are some great bands popping up using the legendary SP404. Take 'Dog Bite' for example, this Atlanta based solo artist has found a nice little niche using the uber-tool. "On the air" is a beautiful piece that incorporates jittery guitar parts and shimmering percussion to create a blissed out and uniformly terrific song. 'Sloppy Tender' puts out some awesome shit-gaze stuff from Brooklyn NY. I would classify it as tropical, watery, hazy, noise. 'Fool's Gold' has been a band that we've been tracking for some time now. Even before WTKDK we had mentioned them to our friends. So we were excited to hear their first proper single "Surprise Hotel" and even more excited when "Nadine" was released. The music that 'Fool's Gold' produces is truly original, the fact that Luke and the crew croon in Hebrew is innovative enough, but to throw an African and Latin vibe into the instrumentals makes it extraordinary. "Nadine" is definitely the stand out between the two tracks, Top's wispy voice rolls over a buoyant bass line followed by an airy horn part that completes the song. If you've never heard of 'AA Bondy' you are missing out my friend. Bondy's new single "When The Devil's Loose" has been on heavy repeat at SE headquarters* these days. It's a dusty, bluesy, Dylan-esque work that lives true to Bondy's former sound. Although his melody's haven't evolved from 2007's masterwork "American Hearts," that's not necessarily a bad thing. The San Fran based 'Girls' have decided to take their show on the road and are headed to Europe at the end of this month. 'Girls' Californian bedroom rock was a soundtrack to the last month of our summer. 'Spectrals' is lo-fi pop from across the pond. Hailing from Leeds, 'Spectrals' seems to posses a more American feel than anything else. With citing influences such as the 'Beach Boys' and calling himself the aforementioned "bleach boy" you would assume that he was from California, but you would be wrong. The sound he produces is close to that of his major influence, although it does seem more bedroom and less beach. "Don't Mind," his first single is a tribute to late Summer fun and "Leave Me Be" is more of a thought out jam that implements a cleaner recording technique. Mp3's and tour after the jump.

A good lo-fi band from Washington state? A question that has been on my mind all summer. I figure there's a couple, Herr Jazz is the first one that comes to mind. With that being said, This next band shattered my expectations. I find myself surprised that I have not discovered this band already, since I have been binging on hazy, lazy, lo-fi surf rock these days. Although 'Desolation Wilderness' do credit themselves on being beachy they take a different approach to things other than say Real Estate. The music 'Des Wild' produces is far sutler and watery than any other band in the sub-genus of the "no-wave/shit-gaze" genre. "Boardwalk Theme" starts with a great guitar part that is drenched in reverb and soaked in the strumming of a backing guitar part. By the bridge you're hooked. Make sure to grab a copy. Cleveland Ohio's 'Cat Killer' is slowly on the rise to dream pop stardom. With blogs such as NPIP picking up his scent, its easy to conclude that this guy means business. Even though it is a solo project 'Cat Killer's' sound is only limited by the hazy recording methods taken that only adds to the already ethereal lyrics and guitar riffs. "Tree Limbs Together" is more of a late Summer song rather than a Fall jam, so snag a copy and take it to your end of the summer parties. Cat Killer also has a free EP(He even sends the CDR to your house!) out on his MySpace so make sure to message him about that. MP3 after the jump.

Navajo Bixby

The New Jersey based 'Navajo Bixby' is best described as a fusion of Panda Bear, El Guincho and The Beach Boys. "Many Ways" starts out with a poppy guitar rif and soon becomes a epic SP-404 beach party meltdown. "Moonlighting" is just as incredible, it starts with a simple strum which later on turns into a mish mash of odd Willy Wonka samples and what sounds like old surf rock guitar parts. The songs posted make up the debut demo from 'Navajo' but we'll make sure to keep you posted on any new updates.
