Jen Paul / No Lakes

What makes a good ambient song? That question has been in the back of my mind all summer. With awesome bands like Wild Safari, Cough Cool, and Pink Priest generating a lot of buzz, ambient music seems to be a fairly applicable thing to talk about. I know some people say, "Oh man, ambient music is something that you should be able to fall asleep to (ugh)." I beg to differ, personally I believe that ambient genre should be savored, it's not something you fall asleep to, it's something you contemplate. Take for example "Jen Paul / No Lakes," a ambient, shoegazey, solo project from Jersey. 'No Lakes' is a outfit that definitely should be admired. Oozing with teen angst, 'No lakes' is ambiance personified, or to put it shortly, girl can jam. Whining, ethereal, guitar parts are pieced together to create an atmospheric and almost airy vibe. Pink Priest

Autumn is just around the corner that means that the seasonal summer music will have to go away for yet another year. With that being said, 'Pink Priest' has produced some pretty impressive minimalist tunes for the chill of October and November. Tones and drones are 'Pink Priest's' forte, the fact that Watson can turn a slow hum into something so hauntingly beautiful, makes him a forced to be reckoned with in the world of ambient music. "She Was Dressed As A White Witch" my favorite of 'Priest's,' begins with a epic buzz that rings in your eardrums, until the faint sound of watery keyboard work is subtly placed throughout it. It's a great song for a foggy Autumn morning or a icy, crisp, Fall night. Also check out Watsons other project the breathtakingly sweet 'Wild Safari'. Wild Safari

'Wild Safari's' elegance is only outclassed by their attention to every detail. All I can say is that this is one of the most beautiful projects I have ever had the privileged of listening to. When talking about post-rock many bands come to mind EITS, GYBE, DMST, but none really compare to 'Wild Safari's' superior warm, ambient feel. "Second Base," can be compared to the feeling of warm clothes or a foggy mountain drive. Guitars whimper and synth drones delicately in the background of this, 6 minute too short, track. When you can listen to something all day and never get tired of it you know that, this is the pinnacle of ambient music. Grab "Second Base" and a bonus Mp3, after the jump.
